Too Many Colors

More than 3-4 distinct hues in a UI looks chaotic. Use one primary, one accent, and neutrals. If you need variety, create it through lightness and saturation variations of those 2-3 hues.

Random Grays

Don't use pure gray (hsl(0, 0%, X%)). Tint your grays with your primary hue at very low saturation (hsl(243, 5%, X%)). This creates subtle visual cohesion — the grays feel like they belong to the palette.

Ignoring Dark Mode

Simply inverting colors for dark mode doesn't work. Lightness needs to flip, saturation often needs to decrease (vivid colors are harsh on dark backgrounds), and some hues shift perception at different lightness levels. Plan your palette with both modes from the start.
